Children should be taught early in life the responsibilities of having children. Young girls especially should know that they are responsible for their own bodies and not let guys push them into things they are not ready for. They should be made aware that should they get pregnant, the bulk of the responsibilities is theirs and the guy can just walk away with a shrug of his shoulders. Hopefully, knocking some sense of responsibility early in life will cut down the number of those who are unable to take care of children have them. There are always those who due to no fault of their own who can’t look after their children because of unseen unfortunate circumstances such as illness or job loss. But instilling a sense of self-responsibility early in life is crucial if we want to cut down on the number of starving and uncared for children.

Agreed. I had never seen this movie – despite the fact that I actually work for a food bank! A lot of the points made by the movie were spot on – they did seem to leave out many of the points you made, though. I make the point constantly at work that along with feeding the truly hungry our end-goal should be to become unnecessary. That requires effort on both side of the table, so to speak. we need a process that does not enable, but empowers and encourages people. Sadly, the government seems to teach that suffering of all kinds must not happen – which allows people to be comfortable in their poverty. Suffering can be the catalyst that pushes people to change. The women you referred to know that they can continue to make the same decisions and their needs will be fulfilled. The concept of being embarrassed over making the same mistakes over and over is gone. Families are being taken apart. Poverty is the result of these bad decisions – and politics plays a major role. I see the responsibility as one that SHOULD be shouldered by the private sector. The government has stepped too far into the problem – and as usual they make a huge mess of it.
